Moms, are you ready for making the bedtime process simple and peaceful? Here’s one simple trick that ended the bedtime battles with our four kids!
Admit it, as much as you love your days with your kiddos, you’re secretly counting down the minutes until bedtime, right? For some of us, once our kids are asleep, its the only “me time” we have. But as much as we yearn for the glorious snoozing sounds of our precious, sleeping angels, the process of getting them to sleep can be an all out battle.
Out of our 4 kids, (ages 4, 6, 8, and 10), only one of them (our 6 year old) falls asleep the moment his head hits the pillow. He’s obviously our favorite.
The other three kids take MUCH longer to unwind and decompress. “Read to me!” “Rub my back!” Can I have a sip of water?” “I have to go to the bathroom!” “Can I have more water?” You know the drill – maybe this happens in your home too.
The issue for me is, come about 7 PM, I’m done. My “Mommy Tank” is empty. After the long day, every parenting skill I’ve ever developed has been sucked out of me and I’m left exhausted, grumpy and with zero tolerance for more
damn sips of water. So as you can imagine, over the years we’ve had some major BEDTIME BATTLES.
Then a few years ago, I discovered podcasts for kids. Even better…BEDTIME podcasts for kids. These were clearly created by God himself for exhausted mothers around the world; because, get this…the narrators of said podcasts speak in hypnotizing, soothing voices that make anyone within earshot want to curl up in little nests for a long winter’s nap. Moms, these podcasts have literally saved my sanity.
This doesn’t mean we’ve omitted snuggling as part of our bedtime routine. But its no longer a torture chamber of “lay with me just a little longer Mommy?” “I need moooore water!!!” Now, our routine looks more like this:
- Quick snuggle with each babe in their beds (most of the time my husband takes the boys room and I take the girls)
- Lights on for a few mins if they are reading
- Lights out and Bedtime Podcasts begin until they fall asleep (usually pretty quickly)
These podcast “stories” are interesting enough that the kids want to listen…but not so intriguing that it prevents them from falling asleep. Son #1’s favorite is Bedtime History. The narrator’s voice is super chill, and our kids have learned about some pretty awesome historical figures as they doze off to dreamland. Another favorite of ours is Ahway Island. These episodes begin with a calming meditation for the kiddos and then lead into a story. But again…its that sedating, tranquilizing voice that does the trick!
The other “Mom Win” is that these podcasts are all FREE (but you can always donate to the Podcast to support their work)! We just access them through the Podcast App on our iPhones, which looks like this:
If your kids enjoy Podcasts – even non-bedtime versions, please comment below and let me know. We’re always looking for new ones!
