You don’t know the true meaning of a hangover until you’re a Mom, am I right?
Unlike our pre-kid days, Friday night drinks are all fun and games until we have to get up and be a mother at 6 AM!
My Hiatus From Alcohol
The truth is, I went several years as a Mom, hardly ever consuming alcohol. I just couldn’t figure out the balance of “Momming” while also managing even the slightest hangover that even one or two drinks could bring me.
However, I’ve been working hard this past year towards finding more balance in my life. To me, this balance means being a devoted Mom, while also finding enjoyment for myself. This enjoyment occasionally includes consuming an alcoholic beverage or two. Whether its meeting my girlfriends for dinner and drinks or sitting by our outdoor fire pit with my family and a drink in hand.
The best part is, about a year ago, I finally discovered a way to enjoy a drink or two…without feeling hungover when our four kids are stampeding into our bed to wake us up at 6 AM!
My husband, who is a bartender, always reminds me that the key to avoiding hangovers is to hydrate and pump our bodies with electrolytes while consuming alcohol (don’t wait until the next morning!) Enter my new best friend…Nuun (pronounced noon).
Nuun is designed for high-impact athletes (ie, marathon runners). Now, I’m no runner, but being a Mom while recovering from an evening of drinking is basically the same thing as running a marathon to this Mama. Maybe the company should change its slogan to say, “designed for marathon runners and moms who drink.” Lol.
My New Drink
Nuun comes as tablets and should be mixed with 16 oz of water (or in my opinion, any beverage of your choice!). Its available in several flavors like Mixed Berry, Lemon Lime, Blueberry Tangerine, and Blackberry Citrus & Caffeine. The flavors aren’t overpowering – the taste is rather light and refreshing!
I add a Nuun tablet directly to my drinks. Here’s one of my favorite recipes:
- 1/3 Seltzer
- 1/3 Lemon Citrus Vodka
- 1 Nuun Lemon Lime Tablet
I’ve also tried this one…
- 1/3 Seltzer
- 1/3 Vodka
- 1 Nuun Mixed Berry Tablet
Added Bonus: No Carbs!
The company tags its product as “The Clean Hydration.” They use healthy ingredients such as Stevia and green tea extract rather than sugar. For me this is a major bonus because when I consume sugary drinks…I feel even worse the next day!
Where To Buy
I typically buy Nuun at Whole Foods. But have also seen it sold in other grocery stores. And of course, you can purchase it from Amazon as well!
Mamas, what hangover prevention do you use? Leave me all your secrets in the comments! And let me know if you try Nuun in your beverages, I’d love to hear how you like it!
